Some days I think I must be from another planet. Perhaps I am simple- minded- more than a few folks would agree with that statement. Why can’t people just say what they mean? Why do we have to perform linguistic and mental gymnastics to construct and decode our conversations?
No matter what business you are in, your job, your background, or your personal situation, we all have days that require a translator. The key to deciphering these cryptic codes is to have a “legend”, a key, A Rosetta Stone. Here goes.

Defense Mechanism
Insecurity
Deflecting Questions or Responsibility
Don’t Understand the Issue
Hedging Bets
Not Listening
Once you can identify communication barriers, you can work to overcome them. How can you successfully translate? Ask questions, of course. Understanding takes curiosity, commitment, and a willingness to see another’s perspective, perhaps one you had not considered. By building rapport and showing genuine interest, you might learn something. And, it is okay to disagree- you can be authentic and respectful. We are more alike than we think.
You cannot make others speak your language, but with a bit of inquisitiveness (and some practice), you can learn to communicate with aliens.
